For decades, our lives were defined by operational timelines, government service, and family schedules. We know how to execute a mission, which is exactly why we aren’t rushing this one.
Side by Side Somewhere documents our deliberate, three-year transition from the careers we built to the life we are designing. This isn’t a reckless escape or a sudden leap; it is a methodical, practical downsizing of our obligations to make room for what matters. We are using this time to intentionally strip away the excess, test our theories, and lay the groundwork for sustainable freedom—built carefully, practically, and side by side.
This blog will discuss:
- The Transition Plan: Financial preparation, timelines, downsizing, storage decisions, researching trucks and campers, trial trips, debt reduction, and exit strategies.
- Financially Sustainable Freedom: Budgeting, fuel costs, campground costs, maintenance planning, healthcare, internet costs, remote work, and realistic financial planning.
- Couple Dynamics in Small Spaces: Communication, routines, conflict resolution, division of labor, privacy, alone time, intimacy, and emotional adaptation.
- Practical Truck Camper Living: Power systems, water management, organization, internet, safety, maintenance, cooking, laundry, mail forwarding, and daily logistics.
- Adventure & Exploration: Hiking, running trails, national parks, scenic drives, seasonal travel, and slow travel experiences.
- Creative & Personal Life on the Road: Knitting, crochet, hobbies, routines, creating a sense of home, portable creativity, reading, and maintaining identity while nomadic.
- Reinventing Life After Service/Careers: Identity after structured careers, redefining success, reclaiming time, and intentionally designing a meaningful next chapter.
We’re embracing a simpler, more intentional life—trading excess for freedom, mobility, and experiences that matter more than possessions. With our kids grown, this season feels like an opportunity to rediscover each other and create a meaningful new chapter together. And after careers built around discipline, planning, preparedness, and long-term thinking, we’re approaching this transition the same way: with purpose, adaptability, and a sense of adventure as we build a sustainable nomadic life on our own terms.
